A new study shows a drug may cause Parkinson's disease in some people.
But scientists from the University of California, San Francisco, examined whether drugs like Vyvanse (semaglutide) could cause a disease in other people.
The study, which was published inNew England Journal of Medicine, looked at how the drug works in people with Parkinson's.
Using a gene-based approach, scientists tested whether Vyvanse was similar in terms of its effect on a patient's symptoms. They found that the drug reduced Parkinson's symptoms by a factor of 1.3.
The drug caused an increase in the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters in the brain that control mood, behaviour and cognitive function, researchers said in the journal'sJAMA Network Open.

"We know that the effects of medications can have important therapeutic implications for Parkinson's disease. In addition, it is important to know that these drugs are relatively safe and have no known side effects," said study lead author and associate professor Dr Jennifer H. Schloss, who was not involved in the research.
Vyvanse, known by its generic name, sildenafil, is a prescription-only drug for treating male sexual disorders, such as erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension. It was initially studied as an adjunct to other treatment options, but its potential benefits on the elderly and women's health has made it a cornerstone of treatment for Parkinson's disease.
Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, tested the drug in more than 8,000 volunteers from a variety of different ages and genders. The volunteers also reported side effects like muscle pain and fatigue.
The scientists found that sildenafil decreased Parkinson's symptoms by 50 percent in the volunteers and 50 percent in the women, and by another 50 percent in those who took the drug. Those who took sildenafil also reported a significant reduction in Parkinson's-like symptoms in the women.
The researchers also looked at the effects of the drug on the levels of serotonin, another neurotransmitter in the brain that helps regulate mood, behaviour and cognitive function.
"The drug has a wide-ranging effect on neurotransmitters in the brain, and it has not been studied in any other area of the brain or even in the body, and we did not have any known side effects," Schloss said.
The findings, published in theon Monday, were published in the journal'sJAMA Network Open.The study was led by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of the District of Los Angeles.
The researchers were not involved in the study because they wanted to examine whether Vyvanse may affect a specific group of people's symptoms. They were not able to conduct the research because they were limited to examining people with Parkinson's.
The drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003 for treating erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension, Schloss said. It is not known if it will affect people with Parkinson's.
"We do know that the effects of medications can have important therapeutic implications for Parkinson's disease. In addition, these drugs are relatively safe and have no known side effects," she said.
Sildenafil, the drug's active ingredient, is in the same family as the older medicine, Viagra.
The drug's effects on the elderly and women's health have made it a staple for treating Parkinson's disease, Schloss said.
"It is important to note that not all Parkinson's patients will respond to sildenafil, and many patients may not respond to Viagra," she said.
It has been used for decades as an anti-depressant and in some cases as an antidepressant, Schloss said.
The drug is not approved for treating other mental health conditions, including dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. However, Schloss has seen positive results with the drug, which may make it more appealing to older people.
In one study, Schloss found that sildenafil reduced Parkinson's symptoms in a large group of Parkinson's patients. The drug also reduced the rate of deaths from Parkinson's in that group.
